Orissa High Court tells MCI to reconsider MBBS seat hike at VSS, MKCG

VSS Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMSAR), Burla and MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur has requested to hike MBBS seats from this academic year.

A bench of justices Indrajit Mahanty and D P Choudhuryon September 14 asked the MCI to place requests of two institutions to increase the intake capacity from 150 to 250.

On VIMSAR, the HC said, immediate steps in this regard should be taken as number of MBBS seats in the state fell by 250 this time, compared to those in 2014.The court said the MCI should make its recommendations by September 23 and, if favorable, the central government should issue a permission letter for admissions by September 25 since September 30 is the last date for it.

But the MCI team rejected VIMSAR's application to raise the seats from 150 to 250, citing deficiencies.

On MKCG, the court observed that the MCI did not inspect the college on the ground of non-deposit of fees. The medical college had deposited the inspection fee for 2014-15, seeking increase in the number of seats. But no inspection was carried out. The court said that MCI should have considered the fee deposit for 2014-15 and also for 2015-16 as the college has deposited the fee last year but the inspection was not carried out.

The court said the executive panel, if necessary, may immediately send an inspection team to MKCG and prepare its report to the central government, keeping in mind that September 30 is the last date of admission.
