The College has been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and affiliated to Kerala University for Health Sciences (KUHS). D.Pharm course has the approval of Directorate of Medical Education, Govt. of Kerala.

 

The courses are designed with a focus to help individuals to pursue a career in pharmaceutical sciences. The Laboratories are on par with the latest standards in the state. M Pharm(Pharamaceutical Analysis)

Course InformationM.Pharm or Master of Pharmacy is a postgraduate degree, which covers the preparation, dispensing, and proper consumption of drugs. The course offers ample job opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and nursing homes. M.Pharm graduates are much demanded in research operations in pharmaceutical industry. The research section usually involves in processes associated with the development of new drugs.
M.Pharm graduates are also preferred in production work in pharmaceutical industry and in pharmaceutical laboratories. The role of pharmacist in laboratories is to analyze the purity and strength of drugs manufactured. In addition to the job opportunities in India there exist many job options outside the country also.

Duration : The academic duration of M.Pharm course is two years (24 months). Only candidates who have registered for all subjects of M.Pharm Part-I examination shall be eligible for admission to M.Pharm Part-II course.
The thesis of M.Pharm Part II is to be submitted on completion of 24 months.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis aims at both theoretical and practical education to assure the quality, safety and efficacy of drugs, which fulfils one of the basic tasks of pharmaceutical studies. Qualified faculty and state of the art instrumentation room make this department suitable for modern day teaching and research.

The mission of the department is to enlighten the students about application of analytical techniques in accordance with the drug regulatory affairs, to make them realize the importance of method validation, to make them understand development of quality assurance and quality control protocols as per GMP, GLP and cGMP guidelines. It is a regular practice of the department to teach the students to utilize the official pharmacopoeias to establish standards of the pure drugs and drug formulations.

The department has well maintained laboratories with sophisticated glass wares and a central instrumentation room with advanced versions of the analytical equipments is also available. Instruments like HPLC, FTIR and UV spectrophotometers, Polari meter, Flame photometer, Sonicator, Rotary flash evaporator, Refractometer and statistical soft wares are employed for regular teaching and research.

The Department of Pharmacy Practice, commenced in the year 2008, is a full-fledged academic division of Al Shifa College of Pharmacy. Apart from the facilities of the college, Al Shifa Hospital, the largest tertiary care referral hospital of the city offers an excellent platform for clinical exposures to the students.
Al Shifa College of Pharmacy is the first institute in Kerala to start Pharm.D Course in the year 2010 and currently has five batches of Pharm.D. Pharmaceutics is the science of delivering biologically active compounds to the body through strategies that are designed to elicit an optimal therapeutic response. An understanding of pharmaceutics allows scientists to convert a potential drug into an effective medicine that can be administered to patients in a safe and convenient manner. Our department concentrates on four areas of pharmaceutics:

drug delivery, the development of the most appropriate form or method for administering a pharmaceutical compound .
nanotechnology and nanomedicine, the design of medical interventions at the scale of molecules and atoms.
biopharmaceutics, the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs and toxins in the body.

Diploma(Pharm D)

Course InformationPharmacy is a field in medicine which links health science with chemical science. Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) is an under graduate diploma programme in the medicinal field of Pharmacy which enables a candidate to know the basic concepts of pharmaceutical science.
After the completion of D.Pharm course, the candidates become a registered pharmacist and have a huge career scope both in government as well as private organizations.

Duration -

The course will extend over a period of two academic years with each academic year spread over a period of not less than one hundred and eighty working days.
There shall be an examination in the first year on the subjects of Part-I and an examination in the second year comprising the Part-II subjects. The course of study for D.Pharm Part-1 and D.Pharm part-II shall include the subjects as given in below.

V.H.S.C of Kerala from 1994-95 session with Group A and B only are considered as equivalent exam for admission to D.Pharm course. (Group A - N.C.E.R.T syllabus in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Group B - N.C.E.R.T syllabus in Physics, Chemistry and Biology).

Out of 60 seats available, 50% of seats will be merit seats and it will be filled up according to rank as per the merit list prepared on the basis of marks obtained for Physics & Chemistry at the qualifying examination.
The remaining 50% will be management seat. Selection & Admission to Management Quota for D.Pharm course 2011-12 will be done according to rank as per the merit list prepared on the basis of marks obtained for Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Mathematics of the qualifying examination.

B Pharm (B Pharmacy)

Course InformationBachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) is an under graduate course in the field of Pharmacy. This field mainly concerns with the preparation and dispensing of drugs and medicines. It is a course of 4 years duration.
B.Pharm course will cover a syllabus including health care and biochemical science. The program covers practical experiments along with theory classes.
The candidate with a degree in Pharmacy has a great career ahead. They are assured of good salary packages also. They can also go for their higher studies including Maters degree in Pharmacy, Master of Business Administration etc.

The basic eligibility for the B.Pharm program is a pass in HSC (10+2). The students must have studied Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
The applicants must have scored at least 50% marks in 12th standard or equivalent with Mathematics or Biology as one of the subjects.
Another education qualification which will be considered equivalent to +2 is the D.Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy).
Admission DetailsCriteria :

Admission Test, marks in qualifying examination etc. are the criteria which decide the respective weightages in admission. First criteria is merit in entrance examination, 2nd criteria is marks in qualifying examination.

50% Marks in qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics is taken as the minimum level of acceptance.

40% Marks is the cut-off levels of percentage & percentile scores of the candidates in the admission test for the last three years.

Pharm D

Course InformationThe Internationally recognized Pharm. D programme commenced in Al Shifa College of Pharmacy from the Academic Session 2009 - 10 is the First in Kerala State, approved by the Pharmacy Council of India and affiliated to University of Calicut/KUHS (Kerala University of Health Sciences).
Pharm D. is a six year course providing intensive training in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy services. The course will include five years of clinical and community-based theory with ward rounds and one year internship in hospitals. We have ample infrastructure focusing mainly on clinical aspects. Pharm D. students will work in coordination with doctors to treat patients. In the final year, the student will come out as a clinical pharmacist who will be an essential component of healthcare equal to doctors. Pharm D. graduates will study in detail about drugs for different diseases, will advise patients about dose, action, and side effects and has knowledge and skills of current diagnostic methods, treatment modalities, drug delivery system, therapeutics outcome, pharmaco economics and pharmaco therapy to meet the rapid changes in the healthcare system.
A pharmacist is a vital link in the physician-patient chain and he is expected to play a key role in the dissemination of pharmaceutical knowledge. The practice of pharmacy includes the custody, preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products besides providing advice on health and nutrition related issues. The introduction of the Pharm D. course is set to change the countrys pharmacy education landscape and is expected to take the countrys pharmacy education to international levels.

Duration of the course -

The duration of the course shall be six academic years (five years of study and one year of internship or residency) full time with each academic year spread over a period of not less than two hundred working days. The period of six years duration is divided into two phases -

Phase II - consisting of internship or residency training during sixth year involving posting in specialty units. It is a phase of training wherein a student is exposed to actual pharmacy practice or clinical pharmacy services and acquires skill under supervision so that he or she may become capable of functioning independently.

A pass in any of the following examinations -
(1) 10+2 examination with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Biology with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate for optional subjects.
(2) A pass in D.Pharm course with a minimum of 50% marks from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.
(3) Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India as equivalent to any of the above examinations.

Provided that a student should complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.

Admission Test, marks in qualifying examination etc. are the criteria which decide the respective weightages in admission. First criteria is merit in entrance examination, 2nd criteria is marks in qualifying examination.

50% Marks in qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics is taken as the minimum level of acceptance.

40% Marks is the cut-off levels of percentage & percentile scores of the candidates in the admission test for the last three years.

Eligible candidates can submit their appliction through online.
The application form for admission is enclosed along with the prospectus or the same can be downloaded from College site.
The duly filled application form with necessary documents should reach the college office as early as possible.
Incomplete and incorrect application will not be considered.
The right of admission is reserved by the Principal.
Prescribed fee should be paid at the time of admission.
Fees once paid will not be refunded.
Admission is provisional and subject to the approval of the concerned authority.
The right of admission of the present student of the college to the next higher class is decided by the Principal.
The following original documents are required to be submitted at the time of admission along with 3 sets of xerox copies.

SSLC or equivalent marks card.
PDC/10+2/HSC or equivalent marks card.
Transfer certificate.
Date of birth certificate.
Migration certificate (Only if necessary)
Eligibility certificate (Only if necessary).

The students are informed to refer rules and regulations of KNMC, INC, AICTE, DME, University of Calicut and Govt, of Kerala.

NOTE :

Once any candidate is admitted for any course, and wants to withdraw the seat or discontinue the studies after closing the admissions in the same academic year or in subsequent academic years, to join other courses or for other purposes, he/she is liable to remit the fees as per the rules of SIMS and the Liquidated Damage as per Govt, rules. In such cases, the Transfer Certificates will be issued only after remitting the Liquidated Damages and the remaining fees of the course.

Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate)

Course InformationNowadays, the profession of Pharmacy has changed to meet the global standards and the need of promotion of rational drug use to ensure patient safety in developing countries like India.
The introduction of Pharm.D course and Pharm.D Post Baccalaureate course in to the Pharmacy academic field will meet the urgent need of the present scenario. The curriculum is designed in such a way that it is more patient care oriented than general pharmacy.

Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) is a three year program including two years of study in the college with practical in the Al Shifa Hospital, Perintalmanna and one year internship or residency in the Al Shifa Hospital, Perintalmanna. During the internship, the students will be posted in various clinical specialties to get exposure in clinical pharmacy activities under supervision.
Upon completion of the internship, the student will acquire knowledge and skill for delivering clinical pharmacy services to both patient community and healthcare team.
